It’s love week! And yes, maybe it’s traditionally meant for romantic love, but I don’t think valentine’s day should be limited so much.
I believe it should be about pausing and appreciating all the important people in our lives – our parents, our children, our friends, and yes, of couse our spouses.
Unfortunately, I think it’s all too easy for life to pass by without us making sure our friends and family know what they mean to us – and I think Valentine’s day is the perfect reminder for us to slow down and hug our loved ones.
When was the last time we called our mom just to tell her that we appreciate her? How often do we get down on our children’s level, look into their eyes, and tell them mommy/daddy loves them? Doesn’t it feel good to get a “just thinking of you” message from a friend? Is there a friend we could check in with and remind them they are loved? Or when did we last tell our husband or wife how important they are to us – no requests or requirements, no strings, just an “I love you. I’m glad we are in this together”.
And because there would be no love without Jesus, I think valentine’s is also a perfect time to reflect on our Heavenly Father and His love for us. Because of Him, we can live life with our head held high, knowing that no matter what any one else thinks about us or says to us, it doesn’t change our worth. We are loved and valued because the King and Creator of the universe loves us.
When we truly grasp that, we can start to extend the same kind of love to the people in our lives – not only our friends and family, but also the hard-to-love people that we struggle to get along with.
Because true love has no limitations. And true love really doesn’t come from us – just through us.
