When Kenzie started turning her dream of a coffee shop into something more, one of the big decisions she needed to make was a name. She wanted something simple. Something fresh. And most importantly, something that captured the heart of her mission.
Having dealt with long-term stomach issues and headaches directly tied to the food she
was eating, she knew from the start that this coffee shop would be different. We would only cook with clean, whole ingredients – never with refined sugars or seed oils.
But the vision didn’t stop there. She also wanted this to be a place of community, support, and encouragement. A place that doesn’t just serve healthy food, but that also feeds your soul too, so you leave feeling a little lighter than when you walked in.
Enter Nourish.
To feed, support, nurture, encourage. To provide substances necessary for growth, health, and good condition. That’s the definition of nourish, and it’s the heart behind our business. When Kenzie landed on the word as the name, it just clicked. It really encompassed everything it needed to. We’re not only about what’s on your plate, but about the whole experience.
If you notice, the definition mentions food and substances necessary for good health, but it also specifically calls out support, nurture, and encouragement. Yes, it’s about taking care of your body. But it’s more than that too, it’s also about feeding your mind and spirit. It’s creating a space for you to just be. The quiet moments with a coffee before jumping into your day. The encouragement and support from conversations you didn’t expect to have. The permission to be unplugged for twenty minutes.
So what does this look like in practice?
Well, it starts even before the kitchen. We care about where our ingredients come from, and the quality of the things we use. Whenever possible, we source local items – like our bread, eggs, and milk. Our coffee is roasted from high quality beans, just a few hours away. But even when we don’t have a local provider, we are constantly checking ingredient labels to make sure we are only using things that align with our values, the same things that we use in our own kitchen at home.
From the beginning, we have been making all of our own coffee syrups, salad dressings, and sandwich spreads. Yes, even the mayo is made in-house. This way we know exactly what is in our food, and there’s no sneaky seed oils or refined sugars making an unwanted appearance. We use raw cane sugar, local honey, and real maple syrup, pure olive oil, and butter. Not as a claim to fame. Not to be restrictive or rigid. But because we care, and we believe that a healthy life starts with healthy ingredients.
But as we alluded to earlier, it doesn’t stop on your plate. No matter how good the ingredients are, they’re not the whole story. When you walk in the door, there’s a sense of peace and community. You could say it feels like a big breath of fresh air. The smiling baristas who ask about your day, and genuinely care about your answer. Other customers who feel like friends, because whether or not you knew them before, Nourish has drawn you together and formed an instant connection. Music that is calming and encouraging. These are all things that we envisioned being a part of the Nourish experience from the very start.
To us, these things are a piece of nourishment. Even if you have the best food with all the healthy ingredients, you can still walk away feeling empty if your mind and spirit weren’t nourished. So alongside the food, our goal is to provide a space that feels like an invitation, and community that feels a little bit like family.
So what does Nourish Mean?
To us it means whole ingredients, food created with care, and drinks that actually help instead of hurt. It means offering a resource that can serve you no matter where you are on your health journey. It looks like providing a place where you can slow down while you sip your latte. It’s a place that fosters a community where strangers become friends.
And we hope that’s what it means to you too.
